Week in Tech Ish: Flickr Vids, Google App Engine, Adobe Media Player+TV

by Jamie Wilkinson | April 9, 2008

Flickr Video: totally integrated w/i the site, but limited to 90 seconds. I dig the Vimeo-style no-chrome player, and the 90 second limit seems like a good way to encourage “enhancing” photosets rather than turning Flickr into a video community.

Google App Engine: the big G is competing w/ Amazon by offering its infrastructure to host other people’s code. Python-based, django- esque web programming framework using semi-custom BigTable/GQL backend. Force.com does similar. Sounds cool but I hate vendor lock.

Adobe Media Player: like Miro or Joost, a desktop app for managing/
watching media. Pretty cool but I’m still rollin’ on Miro for vids and
iTunes for audio.

Adobe TV: “experts only” YouTube (e.g. closed membership) designed
to provide content for said media player. It sucks (so far)
