Gawker is dead, viral video is dead, everyone is dead

Jamie Wilkinson  October 1, 2008

Richard Lawson of Gawker explains: What Killed The Viral Video?

  1. That Was Funny The First 100 Times: “people are too savvy with the internet at this point to still be enchanted by [YouTube's] simple, chintzy magicks…”
  2. Cynicism: “the marketing companies overplayed their hands on this one, taking what could have been occasionally fun extra components to more mainstream ad campaigns and just overdoing it to death…”
  3. TV on the Computer: “Virals were a distraction from other stuff on the computer, and now virals have just become that stuff on the computer. So what distracts us from that? Television! On, um, the computer…”

Take a vacation. You sound like a hipster complaining about indie rock.

Vertical Sleeping….. Jamie O’Shea is a beast.

Paris Hilton collage made of porn images by Jonathan Yeo

“Yeo is offering Paris 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the posters because she never received any money from her infamous 2004 sex video with then-boyfriend Rick Salomon.”….. nice touch.

Hot Tub in a Dumpster

Ok, back to non-arty Internet Famo…..

Chinese schoolgirl flips off old begging woman. (Ripe for re-mix action).

And from Buzzfeed:

McCain’s Left Eye…. WTF?!

Everybody is talking about the The Greatest Catch Of All Time

Could be fun re-mix material in a “What really happened” kind of way.

Mustachioed 50 Cent

And lastly (and perhaps my favorite of the week), Darth Vader being a smartass…. great idea, well executed, good title, and Darth Vader.

(For more moments in Vader history in Internet Fame see Vader On Wheel Of Fortune….. classic).

YouTube’s Fred inks Hollywood deal

Jamie Wilkinson  September 24, 2008

Well hello there, branded content. 15-year-old spaz vlogger Fred — the 3rd most subscribed person on YouTube (>500k) — has cut a promo deal for 21st Century Fox’s new movie “City of Embers.” More from the Wall Street Journal:

The “Ember” effort is different [from other viral movie-marketing campaigns], though, because it uses an already established YouTube star to endorse the film. “They are using the credibility that this guy has with a specific audience,” says Lars Bastholm, co-chief creative officer at AKQA, a San Francisco digital-advertising company not involved with the campaign. “By not being so overt and making it look like he’s discovering the film for his audience, it comes across as less pushy.”

Week In Famo #3

Evan Roth  September 23, 2008

Greetings all, and welcome once again to The Week In Famo.

- All of the top 12 most viewed articles of the week on buzzfeed either have to do with sex or the presidential race…. all of them.

On digg the #1 most dugg article of the week is a perfect example of web judo. 5 days ago a post about Sarah Palin’s email account being hacked was created which claimed over 6300 diggs (making it the 6th most popular digg article of the week). One day later the onion posted this image on digg under the title Barack Obamas GMail Account Leaked !! (pic) , making if the #1 must dugg article of the week with almost 10,000 diggs.

- “That’s What She Said” is a nice little pulp media project that claimed over 5700 diggs:

- 9 of the top 15 articles on digg were about politics.

- It’s nice when a simple image macro steals 5800 diggs:

And from Boing Boing:

- I’m putting this one in just so Jamie has to explain what a Goatse is:

- Abu Ghraib coffee table:

- Remixed Signage:

- Atari Modern Classics:

Tay Zonday: don’t run away from the heat

Jamie Wilkinson  September 22, 2008

Our favorite reigning chocolate just released an intimate Q&A in which he responds to fans’ burning questions. Some gems:

“what’s it like to be an Internet celebrity?”

“why do you think people liked Chocolate Rain?”

The reign is still killing it — 70k subscribers, #19 most subscribed musician, #68 overall — and what you say? He’s not just on YouTube, peep this header graphic!!

That, sir, is innovative famo marketeering: tayface.com redirects to his Facebook? followtay.com redirects to his Twitter? Tay has a twitter? Created August 6 son:

Tay Zonday: potato salad for breakfast? Delicious.

Update: also check out Josh Cohen of Tilzy.tv interviewing Tay Zonday. Josh throws curveballs but Tay’s still hitting homers.
